Countertop shop drawing cutouts and measurements: what fab needs before you cut
What must be on a countertop shop drawing for sink and cooktop cutouts, radii, overhangs, and seams—so missing measurements do not become scrap.
Missing cutout dimensions--not missing sign-off--are how shops remake tops. Wrong sink model, centerline from the wrong end, or faucet holes that never left the field note become scrap at install.
This guide owns drawing content: cutouts, overhangs, edges, seams, radii, and field-to-shop measurement handoffs. For templater checklist -> sign-off -> Job Packet, see the countertop templater checklist.
Why incomplete cutout specs become scrap
Triggers: cutout from sink outside size instead of manufacturer template; one reference only; mounting type assumed; radii omitted; faucet holes missing; seam through an opening; overhang/edge never dimensioned. Canadian EN/FR shops pay twice: failed fit-up, then remake of a nested slab.
What belongs on a fab-ready shop drawing
Geometry: field-verified lengths/depths with overhangs; readable returns/islands/notches.
Cutouts: exact L x W from manufacturer template; mounting/reveal; position from two named edges; centerline convention; brand/model or physical verify; inside radii.
Penetrations: faucet holes; soap/air-switch/grommets sized and located.
Edges/seams: profile per edge; seams clear of openings (often several inches / ~75-150 mm). If it is not on the drawing, the floor invents it.
Cutout rules that stick
Template not bowl outline. 2. Two references; name left. 3. Prefer centerline--and say so. 4. Brand, model, mounting type. 5. Never leave seam vs cutout to memory. Cooktops: clearances, flange, manufacturer template before programming.
Field-to-shop handoff
Sticky-note centerline -> incomplete quote redraw -> pretty layout missing radii -> invented numbers -> install mismatch. Standard: one job owns dimensions; cutout checklist (size, radius, position, model, mounting); estimated vs measured vs awaiting sink; attach template photo; freeze drawing with cutout block. No sink on site: "cutout HOLD--model TBD".
Canada shop ops
Set inches or millimeters once. Same units everywhere. EN/FR: consistent labels. Zedcut sets in/mm for drawings, nesting, quotes.
Soft product note
Zedcut: shapes, cutouts, edges, and quote on the same job--EN/FR, CAD, cutout catalog (in/mm). Not laser or CNC CAM. Trial or demo. Also quoting, scheduling, nesting.
FAQ
Sink cutout? L x W, radii, mounting, two references, model--manufacturer template. Cooktop? Opening template, centerline, clearances. Radii? Floor guesses otherwise. Handoff? Templater captures; drafter consolidates; production cuts complete cutout-block versions only. Sign-off still required--templater checklist.
